The Union League Civic & Arts Foundation develops and promotes programs that support education, civic responsibility and the arts for children and young adults in the Chicago Metropolitan Area.

Behind our mission and the work that we do is the belief in the unique role that art plays in society. Our mission refers to all of the lively arts, including visual art, short story writing, classical music, jazz improvisation and poetry. We believe that these arts engage the creator and the viewer on a deeper level; they communicate with our intellects, but also with our emotions and spirits. When artists create and when their creations are shared, we are linked to our shared humanity.

One of the former winners of our Visual Arts Scholarship spoke of the important role that the Foundation played in his life, "Perhaps the most important realization a young artist can come to is that one must find and follow his own instincts and drives in order to make a work of any significance. When I won my scholarship from the Foundation, I was overwhelmed and afterwards I felt the responsibility to achieve something."

The Foundation celebrates the talents of young people to encourage them to contribute to the community and to embrace a sense of civic responsibility. Our programs encourage these artists to continue to the process of creating, to challenge their critical thinking and to pass on the values of society from one generation to the next.
