MARTIN RESEARCH GRANT FOR THE 2007-2008 ACADEMIC YEAR

The Union League Civic & Arts Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of a research grant to be awarded to an individual interested in doing scholarly research using manuscripts as primary source material. The grant is named in memory of scholar and Foundation founder Dr. Edward Moss Martin. Applicants must be pursuing a graduate degree at an accredited College or University that is located in the Chicago Metropolitan Area or be a permanent resident of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. The applicant must be formally sponsored by the institution they are attending. The Grant is to be used for expenses related directly to research using original manuscripts.

Purpose: The Union League Civic & Arts Foundation was founded in 1948 to develop and promote programs that support education, civic responsibility and the arts for children and young adults in the Chicago Metropolitan Area. This grant program was established to broaden the Foundation's efforts in education by encouraging research using original manuscripts. This grant is open to any individual pursuing graduate studies who will need to use original manuscripts extensively in his/her research.

Requirements: Applicants must hold a bachelor degree and be formally enrolled in an accredited College or University in an advanced degree program. The College or University they are attending must be located in the Chicago Metropolitan Area or they must supply proof they are a permanent resident of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Applicants must demonstrate that their research involves considerable work with original manuscript material. The Grant is to be used solely for research purposes (e.g., travel to manuscript repositories, photocopy expenses and user fees) and may not be used for tuition expenses.

Application Procedures: Applicants must submit a letter of application, a résumé, and a précis of their research proposal with a proposed budget. These should be mailed to the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation, Martin Research Grant Committee, 65 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL 60604 or sent electronically to CivicandArts@aol.com. The précis should not exceed three typed pages double-spaced. In addition, applicants should arrange to have at least two but not more than three letters of recommendation sent to the Foundation in support of the applicant. One of these letters of recommendation should be from the applicant's thesis or dissertation advisor. Applications received after May 15, 2006 cannot be assured of consideration. All applicants who provide an email address will be notified of the Committee's decision shortly after June 1, 2007.

The Grant: The Grant is $5,000 for the academic year 2007-2008. It is not renewable. The Grant is made to the recipient's sponsoring institution to be disbursed by that institution to the recipient on the condition that the full Grant is made available to the recipient for the purpose stated. At the conclusion of the research project the recipient of the Grant agrees to submit a detailed report to the Research Grant Committee on the research undertaken with the assistance of the grant and to recognize the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation's support in any publication that results from this research.

We are pleased to announce the 2007-2008 recipients of the Martin Research Grant:
Katelyn Mesler (Ph.D. Candidate at Northwestern University) for her research entitled Relationship of Christians and Jews in Medieval Europe using Latin and Hebrew Manuscript sources found in the Biblioteca Palatina in Parma and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York

Thomas Adams (Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Chicago) for his research entitled The Servicing of America; Service Workers and Political Economy In Postwar Los Angeles
