The Foundation facilitates Chicago’s oldest and most respected Music Scholarship Program. This competition’s young awardees are some of the most talented up-and-coming musicians in the Chicago area.

In fact, many of the famous musicians whose performances commemorated the historic opening of Millenium Park would not have been there without the support of the Civic & Arts Foundation. Winners who performed at Grant Park over the summer included Rachel Barton (violin, 1991), Jennifer Koh (piano, 1991), Patrick Sinozich (piano, 1989), Elizabeth Norman (voice, 1996), Jonita Lattimore (voice, 1999), and Rodrick Dixon (voice, 1993).

These esteemed musicians are not the only artists whose careers have been enhanced by the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation. The Foundation is very proud of Josephine Lee (piano, 1995) who is the current artistic director for the Chicago’s Children Choir. The Foundation has supported a long list of now famous opera stars including Sheryl Woods (1978), Nancy Gustafson (1980), Cynthia Haymon (1984), Emily Magee (1994) Patricia Risley (1998), Richard Cowan (1984), Philip Zawisza (1991), Stephen Powell (1994), and Matthew Polenzani (1997).

In 2004, the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation Music Programs gave $57,000 in scholarships to young musicians. According to the incredible success of the Foundation’s past winners, this money is very well spent.
