In the spirit of the Union League Club’s tradition of “commitment to country and community,” the goal of the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation (CAF) is to contribute to the overall vitality of the city of Chicago. We are dedicated to supporting young artists, encouraging them to strive to better their craft and serve as role models for future generations. Through our civic programs such as Transitions, we hope to motivate a sense of understanding and appreciation for the social ties that exist in our community.
Our Success
Through our artistic competitions and networking opportunities, program participants receive support at pivotal moments in their young careers so they can remain and flourish in their profession. Many of our participants have subsequently developed careers that generate great commercial and artistic success: becoming best-selling authors, recognized professionals in their chosen fields, and recipients of awards such as the MacArthur Foundation Genius award, the Beverly Sills Artist Award for Classical Music, the Leonore Annenberg Fellowship, and the First American Honored with the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.
Our civic programs have targeted impact on the people we serve and include groups such as: families undergoing divorce, young children, and law students interested in public interest law. For example, the Transitions guide, part of one of our cornerstone programs which includes a guidebook for divorcing families and continuing education programs, successfully reached a large cross-section of the Chicago community. Since 2004, it has been translated into Spanish and Polish and distributed free of charge through the Cook County court system, social service agencies, and local schools in the Chicago metropolitan area.
I was very pleased to have the Transitions Book available to give to parents in my Order of Protection Call. I found that the parents who read the book were more focused on the needs of their children and that reading the book gave them a framework for accomplishing some agreements regarding the children even if other matters were still being contested. I used the book extensively and came to rely on it as a help in calming highly emotional matters.
